Verify your identity

As a licensed bank, N26 must verify the identity of every customer. When you open an account or use certain products, you need to confirm your identity with a supported ID document.

The verification methods and accepted documents depend on your country of residence. Select your country below to see which documents are accepted:

N26 can only verify identities using specific document types for specific nationalities. If your identity documents are not currently supported, N26 cannot offer you an account at this time. N26 regularly adds new documents to the supported list, so check back later.

N26 never asks you to verify your identity on behalf of other individuals or companies. Learn how to protect your identity from fraud.

Verify your identity with photo or video

You can verify your identity by taking a photo of your ID document or by joining a video call with a verification agent. During the process, you will also be asked to take a selfie so N26 can confirm that the ID belongs to you.

Verify your identity with electronic ID (eID)

Available in Germany only.

Residents in Germany with a German electronic ID (eID) can use a fast-track process to confirm their identity. eID verification is only available in the N26 mobile app.

  1. Select eID Identification when registering.
  2. Enter your 6-digit personal PIN associated with your electronic ID.
  3. Scan your ID card using your phone's NFC reader.
  4. Complete the selfie check. Depending on the provider, you may be asked to record a quick video selfie to confirm your identity.

Requirements for eID

  • A valid German electronic ID card or residence permit.
  • Your 6-digit personal PIN (not the 5-digit transport PIN).
  • An NFC-enabled smartphone.

Troubleshooting eID

  • NFC scan failed. Hold your ID card steadily against the back of your phone until the app confirms the scan is 100% complete.
  • Wrong PIN. If you enter your 6-digit PIN incorrectly three times, the PIN is blocked. You can unblock the PIN using the 10-digit PUK from your original eID letter via the German government's AusweisApp.
  • Selfie issues. Make sure you are in a well-lit area, your face is clearly visible, and you have a stable data connection.
  • Switching methods. If you do not know your PIN or the eID scan keeps failing, exit the flow and select Video call to verify with an agent instead.

Verify your identity with Bank Account Verification

Available in Germany only.

Selected residents in Germany can use Bank Account Verification to confirm their identity. After submitting a photo of your ID and a selfie, you complete verification by transferring money to your N26 account.

Requirements for Bank Account Verification

  • The transfer must come from a bank account in your own name.
  • The bank account must be within the EEA and support SEPA transfers.
  • The transfer amount must be between €1 and €100.

Accessibility

If you are unable to complete your photo or video verification due to a disability, ask for a specialist in the support chat. The support chat is available every day from 07:00 to 23:00, including Sundays and bank holidays.
