Bereavement and probate

Managing the financial affairs of a loved one who has passed is a difficult task. We're here to help you settle the deceased's N26 account as smoothly as possible.

How do I inform N26 about a death?

The best way to notify us is via email. You can also reach us by post or fax.

  • Email: bereavement.service@n26.com
  • Post: N26 Bank AG, 10226 Berlin, Germany
  • Fax: +49 (0) 30 / 959 984 490

Please include the following information in your message:

  • Information about the deceased: Full name and, if possible, a copy of the death certificate. This is the most reliable way for us to identify the correct account.
  • Contact information: The name, address, and email of the primary contact person or beneficiary. Please note that telephone communication for probate matters isn't possible.
  • Additional context: If you have already started legal proceedings — such as rejecting an inheritance or establishing an inventory — please let us know.

Please do not send original documents via post at this stage. If we require an original copy, we will notify you directly.

What happens to the account after the notification?

Once N26 is officially notified of a death:

  • Access is disabled: All associated cards, online banking, and app access will be deactivated.
  • Payments are stopped: Standing orders and SEPA direct debits will no longer be executed.
  • Reporting: N26 may be legally required to notify relevant tax authorities regarding the assets held in the account.

How are assets released?

The process for settling an account can vary depending on regional laws.

  • Required documents: We will notify the beneficiaries directly regarding the exact documents needed to settle and close the account.
  • Release process: It may be necessary to complete a specific set of questions or forms before N26 can release the assets to the beneficiaries.
  • Tax requirements: We strongly recommend getting in touch with the relevant tax authorities in your country to ensure you fulfill all local inheritance tax requirements.

Can I take precautionary measures for my own N26 account?

To ensure your assets are distributed according to your wishes, we recommend seeking legal assistance from a lawyer, notary, or tax advisor. This is especially important for larger estates.

Please note that we cannot provide legal or tax advice.
