Why do I pay the church tax?

We’re legally required to request data relating to church tax deductions and to make the deductions where applicable. This happens every year from September 1st to October 31st.

You’re entitled to appeal against the passing of information about your religious affiliation through an Erklärung zum Sperrvermerk (new tab) form. You can do this before June 30th each year. If you file an objection, your local tax office will request that you submit a church tax declaration yourself.
