Why was a direct debit rejected with my Italian IBAN?

If your direct debit payment with your N26 Italian IBAN was rejected, it’s likely because the company or institution is asking for an extra, optional service called SEDA. This is not required under SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) rules, and refusing SEPA payments for this reason goes against European regulations (Regulation (EU) No. 260/2012).

What is N26 doing about this?

We are aware that this issue affects a variety of companies in Italy. We are actively working with relevant authorities and industry groups to resolve it. We will update you via our official channels as soon as we have news.

What can you do?

  • Use another payment method (like debit or credit card) for now.
  • If you wish, let the company know that refusing SEPA payments is not compliant with EU rules.
  • For phone, internet, or pay TV providers, you can file a complaint with the Authority for Communications Guarantees via Conciliaweb.
