How to shop online with iDEAL

iDEAL is a Dutch payment platform which allows users to pay for goods and services and payment requests between friends and family, in a secure and easy way through the N26 app. Please note that sending payment requests is currently not supported.

Any N26 user* whose account IBAN starts with DE can use iDEAL if the merchant offers it. *Note: iDEAL is not yet available for accounts opened in France, Italy or Spain.

How does it work?

When you’re shopping online and, at the checkout, the merchant offers iDEAL as payment method, all you have to do is:

  • Select iDEAL from the payment methods list
  • Confirm the action
  • Select N26 from the list of partner banks

You will then be redirected to the N26 mobile app, and in order to continue you’ll have to:

  • Login to the app
  • Accept the terms and conditions
  • Review the transaction details
  • Confirm the payment

As soon as the transaction goes through, you will be notified within the app and redirected to the merchant website, which should then confirm your purchase.

FAQs

How can I sign up for iDEAL?

There is no need to sign-up with iDEAL. Just choose iDEAL as a payment method at check-out, and you’ll be redirected to your N26 app. After accepting iDEAL terms and conditions, you will be able to confirm the payment in your app before being redirected to the merchant’s website.

How much does it cost?

iDEAL is free to use. However, a merchant is allowed to add a surcharge for any payment method. If that is the case, the merchant is obligated to inform you of the extra charge before payment.

Can I cancel an iDEAL transaction?

It is not possible to cancel or revoke an iDEAL payment. Once confirmed in the N26 app, the transfer is issued and the amount immediately deducted from your balance.

I haven’t received my goods/services, what can I do? I want a refund. I want to reverse the transaction.

Please contact the merchant to check the status of your purchase and confirm the delivery date. Try to find a solution with them as once you have confirmed the payment in the app, it cannot be reversed.

If still unsuccessful, you still have rights as a consumer. Please consult ConsuWijzer.nl for practical advice. You can also use the complaint form to submit a complaint about the company.

If the payment of a friend and family request failed, you can contact the C2C Provider. You can find this C2C provider on your bank statement.

Note: N26 and iDEAL recommend not to perform a payment using a C2C payment request when you do not know and/or physically meet the payee. If an online marketplace, for second hand goods for example, offers their own payment solution with protection in case of no delivery, you should use it.
