Card spending restrictions for N26 for under 18s
To help keep children safe, N26 for Under 18s blocks card payments at certain types of merchants. These typically include businesses linked to age-restricted products or higher financial risk. There are two types of restrictions for your child’s card:
Always blocked
Some categories are permanently blocked because they involve activities that aren’t appropriate for children. These include:
- Gambling, betting, and lotteries
- Dating, escort, and adult services
- Pawn shops and bail or bond payments
- Investment and securities services
- Specialty retailers selling regulated or dangerous goods
Parent-controlled
Other categories are broader. They include age-restricted merchants, but also everyday businesses your child might need to visit. Because card networks only allow us to block entire categories, not specific products, we let you decide if these should be allowed. You can block or unblock these categories at any time in the app. This makes sure your child has a safe experience by default, while giving you the option to adjust depending on your child’s age and level of independence.
Types of merchants you can block or unblock
Here are the types of merchants you can choose to block or unblock. Even if you do enable these categories, your child still won’t be able to buy cigarettes, vapes, or alcohol.
- Alcohol and liquor: This category includes shops that mainly sell drinks. But it also covers family-friendly retail chains, neighborhood shops, convenience stores, and kiosks at train stations. Enabling this lets your child buy bottled water, juice, or snacks from stores that also sell alcoholic beverages. This category is unblocked by default.
- Tobacco and vaping: This includes merchants like newsstands. Enabling this will let your child buy magazines, comic books, or stationery. This category is unblocked by default.
- Prepaid top-ups, crypto and cash substitutes: This category covers payments that turn money into something else. Enabling this will let your child top up their phone or buy gift cards. It’s blocked by default.
