What is Backup Balance?

Backup Balance is a way you can make sure your card payments are successful, even if the Space sub-account you’ve linked your card to doesn’t have enough money in it.

How does Backup Balance work?

When you enable Backup Balance, you can select one or more Spaces — even your Main Account — to be a backup. If you make a card payment and the Space your card is linked to doesn’t have enough money in it, N26 will automatically pull the remaining amount from your designated backup Space(s). This happens instantly during the transaction, so your payment will go through without interruption. After the payment goes through, you’ll get a push notification from us letting you know which backup Space was used to cover the payment.

How to activate and deactivate Backup Balance

You can manage Backup Balance directly in the N26 app by following these steps:

  1. Go to the ‘Finances’ tab.
  2. Select ‘Automations’.
  3. Choose ‘Backup Balance’.
  4. Follow the prompts to select your backup Spaces or toggle the feature off to deactivate it.

What else do I need to know?

  • Backup Balance only kicks in if the primary linked Space has insufficient funds to cover a card payment.
  • You can choose more than one backup Space, and they will be checked in the order you’ve set.
  • Backup Balance is currently only available for personal accounts.
