Why was my contactless payment declined and how can I fix it?
How do contactless payments work?
Contactless payments on your card use near field communication (NFC). You can pay by holding your card close to a compatible payment terminal.
What do I need to do before using contactless for the first time?
Before you can use contactless for the first time:
- Make sure contactless payments are enabled in your card settings.
- If your card is new, you must first:
- make a cash withdrawal at an ATM, or
- make a payment using the chip and PIN.
After that, you can use your card for contactless payments.
What are the limits for contactless payments?
- Contactless payments (NFC) up to €50 don’t require your card PIN.
- For amounts over €50, or when your cumulative contactless payments are above €150, you’ll need to enter your card PIN.
If contactless is not working, you can always complete the payment using the chip and PIN method.
Why was my contactless payment declined even though I have enough money?
Your contactless payment can be declined even if you have enough money in your account when you:
- reach the maximum amount per contactless payment – €50 – or
- reach the cumulative contactless payment limit – €150.
To use NFC payments again, you need to reset your contactless payment limit.
How can I reset my contactless payment limit in the N26 app?
You can reset your contactless payment limit in two ways:
1. From the app, at any time
- Log in to the N26 app.
- Go to the Cards tab.
- Select the card whose contactless limit you want to reset.
- Go to Card limits > Contactless payment limit > Reset limit.
- Follow the on‑screen steps.
2. From the declined payment notification
- Tap “Reset limit” on the notification about the declined payment.
- Log in to the N26 app.
- Go to Contactless payment limit > Reset limit.
- Follow the on‑screen steps.
Can I reset my contactless payment limit without the app?
Yes. You can also reset your contactless limit by withdrawing money in an ATM or making a payment with the chip and PIN of your physical card at a payment terminal.
Once the withdrawal or payment with chip and PIN is successful, your contactless limit is reset and you can use NFC payments again.
What can I do if contactless still doesn’t work?
- Ask the merchant if their payment terminal supports contactless payments.
- If you have an N26 Metal card, hold the back side of the card against the terminal to use NFC (the front side won’t work).
- Hold your card directly on the NFC sensor of the terminal. If you move it away too quickly or don’t hold it close enough, try again.
If contactless still doesn’t work, you can always pay with the chip and PIN of your card.
